Getting To Know Your Guitar

Getting To Know Your Guitar

“H H & T” #1

Hi!  First things first!  Getting to know your guitar.

I was at such a loss when I picked up a guitar because I went straight to a video of how to play a song and not FIRST learning about the guitar.  “Place your pointer finger on the second fret, G string…”  Ummm, what??  Whats a fret?  Where’s the ‘G’ string?

I should ‘ve taken two minutes to look this up and understand what was what!  It really would’ve helped to first have some understanding of my guitar before trying to jump right in with a song ;)  Getting to know your guitar is important and the first step in mastering it!

So check out the pic’s below and look around your guitar to place everything.  There will be a pop quiz in class tomorrow ;)

The frets are the spaces between the fret bars starting at the nut.  The numbers are showing the 1st fret, 2nd fret, 3rd fret etc… The fret markers (dots) do just that-  They mark the frets giving reference points, making moving around/changing chords easier.  Notice the string order on the right side.  I always want to say that the low E string is #1 but it’s not, it’s #6 and counts down from there to the high ‘e’ string which is string #1.

This pic below is showing the string names (standard tuning) and the corresponding tuning peg for each one.  E(eat) A(all) D(day) G(get) B(big) e(easy) is an easy way to remember standard tuning.  Also, I always write out the high ‘e’ string as a lower case, unlike the pic.

Alrighty then!  Your “H H & T” is over for today :)  (Helpful hints & tips.- Lol,coming from a self -taught guitarist who knows nothing of music theory!  Do yourself a favor and take professional lessons!)

I really hope this helps you become familiar with your guitar :)
