Song Request Rant

Song Request Rant

(Just take 2 minutes and read my little rant, lol!)

USER:  Geez Christy!  Why are you so technical/demanding about song lyrics, direct links and such for a song request? Deleting my request for a missing link?  Ridiculous! I took time making that request in the first place!

CHRISTY:  Well, here’s the thing.  I’m providing a service for you, the user, free of charge, taking MY time (many, many hours over days sometimes!) to help YOU with something YOU want and YOU need.  Is it really that big of a deal to send direct links and lyrics?  To speed up the process, cut corners and help me out a little?

USER:  Well I don’t have time to find the lyrics and I’m not typing them out so…

CHRISTY:  So your time is more valuable than mine?

USER:  Maybe?

CHRISTY:  Try again!  Everyone’s time is equally valued.  You know the saying- “You gotta give a little, to get a little” well in this case a tab is not a little, it’s a lot!  Give a little, get a lot! ;)

USER:  I know, but…

CHRISTY:  Try this- I want you to stop whatever you are doing and take two hours (minimum) and do something entirely for someone else (a total stranger) that you’d have no interest in otherwise.  Just sit at the computer and put on music you don’t listen to, or even like and listen for two hours.  No phone or tablet in hand either.  You have many other things you want to do but it has to be put on hold- to help out this stranger.   Then the next day do it again with a different set of songs. This is my life…

USER:  But you love to play guitar!  You’re being dramatic!

CHRISTY:  I do love guitar.  Everybody has something they love so much- until it becomes a job and your required to do it.  Then not so much!  I don’t think I have picked up my guitar to play a song that I really like just for fun in probably 3 years.  I love Ed Sheeran’s new album and have tabbed songs from it but I have not once just sat to play one of them for fun.  If my guitar is in my arms it’s to ‘work’, for the stranger who needs a tab done, or myself to put on my site.

USER:  You make money so what’s the big deal?

CHRISTY:   This is true.  Websites make money- those that get tens of thousands hits a day and more.  This one… not so much.  I have a little drop in the bucket of a website that barely brings in the cost of having a website.  And I do mean barely!  So all my time spent tabbing averages to pennies on the hour.  This isn’t a site that has a lot of interaction on the page and I get that.  You play your song and leave.  And that’s okay!

USER:  Then why on earth do you do it???

CHRISTY:  Simply because I like helping people.  I fell in love with guitar while teaching myself and I want that for others!  Posting easy to play and understand tabs makes that possible and cuts the frustration so chances are you wont give up before it all just kicks in!  And I really feel like it does just ‘kick’ in!!   I’m spreading the guitar love ♥♥♥

USER:  Okay, I guess you’re not a drama queen, lol.  I get it and understand you want every corner cut to save us both time!  Your time in tabbing and my time waiting for the tab to be posted!

CHRISTY:  Exactly!!  ;)

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Hehe!  That was fun!  You help me so I can help you, get it?  I just want everyone to have fun!!  Any thoughts??  Am I being dramatic?  Let me know :)

Bye! Christy :)

  1. You are absolutely RIGHT!!! If somebody wants a song they should help a little for the big help they are receiving.

  2. I teach beginners to play guitar and ukulele and I have to say that no one understands how much time it takes to prep songs so they’re reasonably easy to use. It’s rare that I start from scratch yet it still takes forever to go through songs and see if the chords are correct, in the right place on the page, do we need to transpose and what strum would work. Then, for my youngest/newest students, I make marks on the page to help them with tempo–where is the downbeat–how do I strum when there’s no one singing…Lava to Love, for instance, took me forever to learn where the pauses are, when to change the strum, tempo, etc. So I just want to say I really appreciate what you do and I’m amazed that you do this for love of guitar and for apparently unaware/ungrateful strangers (I know others are quite grateful). And you make MY work easier, and for that I thank you, too.

    1. Wow! You totally understand :) I do love it and nice comments like yours give me the drive to keep going (it can become very tedious!!) But if I know I’ve made just a little bit of difference for someone who might be struggling, then it’s all worth it :) :) :) Thank you very much!
